STATE OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT
REPORT - SOMER
The recent declaration of the Australian 200 mile Exclusive
Economic Zone has added an area of ocean greater than the land area
of Australia for resource use and management. A complete
description of the state of this marine resource is now available.
The SOMER Technical Summary and Technical Annexes provide
comprehensive accounts of the Australian marine environment, the
threats which face it and the management requirements to sustain it
for future generations.
The SOMER publications comprise:
- Technical Summary - a scientific report summarising
the major findings and management implications of the technical
papers published in the Technical Annexes.
- Technical Annex 1 The Marine Environment - 16
papers on the physico-chemical environments, the nature and status
of major ecosystems and habitats, the status of the better known
marine megafauna, and special considerations in the management of
marine organisms.
- Technical Annex 2 Pollution - 8 papers on aspects of
marine pollution.
- Technical Annex 3 State and Territory Issues - 7
technical papers reviewing the state of the marine environments of
the six Australian States and the Northern Territory.
